Why is breast cancer more common in the left breast? To know more attend the 12th World Breast Pathology & Breast Cancer Conference.

Although researchers are currently unsure of the reasons for this, left-sided breast cancer is more common than right-sided breast cancer.

According to studies According to reliable sources, breast cancer is more common in the left breast than in the right.

The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program analysed data from 881,320 people. The researchers discovered that left-sided tumours were visible in 50.8% of people and right-sided tumours were visible in 49.2% of people.

Although there are consistent reports of left-sided breast cancer occurring more frequently than right-sided breast cancer, research into why this occurs is limited.

This article investigates why left-sided breast cancer is more common than right-sided breast cancer. It also investigates whether left or right-sided breast cancer has a different outcome.

Why is left-sided breast cancer more common?

Experts are still puzzled as to why left-sided breast cancer appears to be more prevalent. Various hypotheses have been proposed by researchers over the years to try to explain it, such as:

·         The left breast's larger size

·         Early detection of tumours in right-handed people

·         Breastfeeding from the right breast is more common than breastfeeding from the left.

Breast cancer is caused by the same genetic and environmental risk factors on both sides of the breast. However, structural differences between the two sides of the breast may exist.
Including:

·         Structure of the tissue

·         Supply of blood vessels

·         Drainage of lymph nodes

Other factors that research has found to influence which side of breast cancer occurs include:

·         The proportion of left-sided breast cancer to right-sided breast cancer may change with age. of the breast may have different ratios depending on which side of the breast cancer occurs.

·         There could be a link between inherited genes and the side of the breast where the disease manifests itself.

Theories that could be considered:

It's important to remember that none of the theories listed below has enough research or scientific evidence to back them up right now.

Breast size on the left:

In most cases, the left breast is larger than the right. According to some research, there may be a link between breast size and breast cancer.

Is left-sided breast cancer more likely to be fatal?

According to some research, the side of the breast where cancer begins may affect the prognosis of breast cancer.

Researchers discovered that the following characteristics were more common in left-sided tumours than right-sided tumours:

·         Tumours that are poorly differentiated or undifferentiated

·         Tumours that are hormone-negative and HER2-positive

·         A higher proportion of grade 2 and 3 tumours

After taking into account the stage, grade, and hormone receptor status of breast cancer, some study participants had more negative outcomes.

The study found no significant differences in outcomes among the other participants.

The study concluded that left-sided tumours may have a lower response to initial chemotherapy and may have a slightly worse long-term outlook than right-sided tumours.

However, more evidence is needed to back up these findings, according to the researchers.

The study discovered that left-sided breast cancer is associated with earlier tumour stages.

The prognosis of breast cancer is affected by a variety of factors, including the disease's stage, grade, and type. It may also be affected by a person's age at the time of diagnosis and whether cancer recurs.

Summary

Breast cancer on the left side appears to be more common than breast cancer on the right side. However, the reasons are unclear, and research is limited.

Some theories include the left side of the breast being larger, right-handed people finding it easier to check their left breast, and people preferring to breastfeed from the right breast. There is currently insufficient evidence to support any of these theories.
